Youth Engagement:
Breakfast clubs offer unique opportunities to engage and empower students by providing excellent
volunteer opportunities that promote leadership, nutrition education, and life skills development.
In this workshop we discuss new ways to meaningfully engage students in the breakfast club and
beyond. The workshop explores ideas for recruiting, managing and mentoring student volunteers,
and offers creative ways to teach new skills, connect to the curriculum, and get students growing,
cooking, and tasting nutritious foods.
Student Wellness:
As a complement to providing children and youth with healthy food, nurturing their minds and spirits
is also important for their healthy development. This workshop provides new strategies for creating
a supportive social and physical environment that fosters student’s well-being. We will explore
examples of simple day- to-day interactions that can encourage student’s self-esteem and help
promote a warm and welcoming environment at your club.
Volunteerism:
Volunteers play an integral role in every breakfast club. This workshop includes ideas for recruiting,
retaining, and managing volunteers. We will also explore creative suggestions for volunteer roles
and responsibilities, and new ideas for recognizing and rewarding volunteers. Participants have the
opportunity to share experiences that reflect their school’s unique circumstances.
Building a Healthy School Community:
Inspired by the internationally recognized Comprehensive School Health Framework (Joint
Consortium for School Health), this workshop helps participants understand how schools, families,
and the broader school community can influence student health and success, starting with their
breakfast club!
